That was a good example for the advantage of FT8 when signals are rather weak and close to the noise. But .174 was crowded with many UA6 and others running FT8 even so they were peaking 59++. Here SSB should be the mode one should choose and not FT8 on a single QRG were 100++ are QRMing each other. Make no sense at all. Btw, TA7OM was almost endstop on .305 in SSB for almost 15 minutes calling CQ lonely with no reply while .174 was circus circus. Heard many more from UA6, TA, SV, YO, LZ all worked before and didn't call to avoid QRM for others. |

It was a patchy and weak opening that lasted perhaps for 15 minutes, with much QSB. All contacts were made in FT8 on 144,174 MHz, which is not my preferred mode for ES (actually the first time I worked FT8 on 2 m ES). I was calling also for some minutes on 144,300 MHz in SSB, but nothing heard there. I heard also UT9UR in FT8. Many thanks for all contacts! |

FT8 has advantages as one sees immediately that there is something going on, but also disadvantages as most stay on ft8. I love the waterfall on the 9700, one can see immediately which frequencies are being used. But what I did not like is some CW station that called CQ right on 144.300 which made it impossible to work some stations as he was just QRM'ing with his extremely strong signal. No need for CW, SSB is faster on 2m. Unfortunately I saw on PSK Reporter that my FT8 signal was received by EK1RR in LN20. I have not received him; it would have been my 148st DXCC. But at least we know that there is activity on 2m in EK now. |

He was booming for about 20 minutes with S9 signal at Smeter. Shortly I heard TA2NC, but signal was very weak, then I tried to call CQ on 145,5 but with negative result.. Time to time I was monitoring 144.174 for condx check only and decoded were: TA2NC, R7KDX and... EK1RR from Armenia (!!!). EK1RR was stable for few periods and peaking -14dB in FT8, QRB 2589km. I was QRV during many Es openings in this area when LiveMUF was showing opened path to 4L, however I saw 0 activity. Most of 4L/EK stations are qrv 2m in FM QRP only which isn't so good for weaker signals on distance over 2200km. I'm sure that if any 4L/EK was active on 144.300 ssb with about 100W++ and 9el hpol yagi, the Es reports would look completly different... Anyway it would be nice if EK1RR arrive at ON4KST chat, maybe next time. 73 Matej |
