Only an hour before the start I was joking with fellow hams that we'd soon work EA8 and D4 today. In fact this could have become 100% true if my QSO with D41CV would have been completed. When he called me I immediately came back with reports but no further signal from Cabo Verde. Later in psk reporter I saw he had even copied my CQ some 10 mins earlier so maybe a QRM issue on .174. What a big xxxxxx! We must find a solution untangling the FT8 traffic on .174 as it is only chaotic particularly in ES openings. However, FT8 had its advantages: Two of the EA8s would have probably not been worked because the signal was too little for SSB. But with standard distance QSOs SSB is much more efficient! 73 Bernd DF2ZC |

The band opened at 15:05 UT and last signals were heard at 15:43 UT. I had always dreamed of a QSO to EA8 via ES, but today it got so much better. I could not believe my eyes when D41CV called me in FT8, distance incredible 4.966 km !!! Fifteen seconds can be endless and I think I was close to a heart attack, but the opening was stable and it was enough to complete the QSO. The signal from D41CV was heard for about 4 minutes. Unfortunately the activity in SSB was again very low, only 3 EA stations were heard and worked, nobody in CW or FM. But not worked: CT1BYM -9 / EA1HRR -6 / EA8TJ -7 73 Wolf DK5AI |

Great! This works when people are educated but all too often, they see dx callsigns appearing on the PC screens and just call, call and call ad infinitum, without ever stopping to evaluate the rapidly changing nature of propagation ‘Periods’ don’t matter on HF, but they are necessary on VHF. It only takes one local to cause havoc in the ‘wrong period’. This mode has brought many to VHF, but they are often failing to understand, learn or adapt before they activate the auto-sequence. There appears to be some arrogance because they are using the PC program with an HF mindset with little consideration of the context in which it is being used. Others are now looking at our wonderful VHF resource with a view to taking some of it away, perhaps? What are they seeing? I was on the edge in this opening with all signals being quite weak. 73 David G4DHF |

I saw an ON station calling an EA7 for over an hour after the EA7 had vanished. There were the idiots that run in 'beacon mode' first which often trashed some of the weaker DX stations. Lastly there were the brain dead, which also happens a lot on SSB, that 'MUST' call you if you call CQ DX. These also don't give up easily leaving not much real DX to work...... |

I switched on the station and the first 2 QSO's were with EA8. All QSO's were FT8. SSB QSO's could have been made at times with EA8DBM, CN8LI and CT1HZE, not with the other stations worked. Beside what worked, seen a few more CT's and EA7's. In parallel to 144.174 FT8, my SDR was monitoring 144200 > 144.400 but not much seen.
