1) QSO with 40 W drive power at DF2ZC

When it looked the opening was going down I left my rx on monitoring and went downstairs for dinner with xyl but kept an eye on the dxc on my cellphone. Nothing special was spotted. But when I returned to shack and checked my rx history I found out that I had copied EA8 twice:
RX 144174 FT8 191245 -25 -43 EB5EEO EA8CXN IL18
RX 144174 FT8 191345 -18 -34 CQ EA8TJ IL18

Luckily "only" from IL18 as usual and not from the EA8 squares I still miss.

A fine opening that lasted for some time. Early on I worked a couple of Italians on FT8 and quickly moved to SSB, where I was able to make far faster QSO’s. The band scope was highly animated for around 30Khz either side of the calling frequency and it was good to see stations making use of the available space, but even then QSO’s were overlapping due to the high levels of activity. An opening that reminded me of those we used to have many years ago. Thanks for the fun! 73's David

Almost 3 short QRB events spread over 3 hours. firstly to EA5, then IS0 and finally I0/8. QSOs were mixed SSB & FT8. There were about 10 incomplete FT8 QSOs into the same general areas.
Today was another fine example of idiots driving computers that are transmitting FT8! There were those that sat on 144.174MHz continuously & mindlessly calling CQ in both periods! There were those that kept calling a DX station, that had long faded away for 20+mins and those that do not understand when a QSO is not complete and do not stop transmitting! As I can hear most stations within 750Km on tropo 144.174MHz it was an example of mutual QRM which makes the worse noises on 144.300MHz insignificant!
Truly an amateur Tower of Babel!

Nice opening this evening and with 4 new locators too,. I am a very happy man now.
Apart for the FT8 QSO right at the start of opening, all signals were very strong and long lasting - a real Es opening, just like the good old days

Please let me say my point of view about the "chaos" the team of MMMonVHF
mentioned a long time on top of their site. What "chaos"? I have to ask...
Wasn't there always a big "chaos" before the good old digital times? Yes!
Indeed there was a "chaos" as well!
And sometimes a much bader one when everybody cried around on 144.300,
mixed with CW stations, requesting endlessly the last two digits of a QTH-locator
so others had no chance to work the DX as well!. It wasn't better earlier - rather it
was bader when the crowd was on during an ES.
And Udo, no I don't think that FT8 is a "shitty" mode which ruins amateur radio.
But I would agree that the behaviour of some stations can look "shitty" - it isn't
the mode itself. And to have 4x22 elements - congrats to be in this lucky stage
with always strong sigs, but please remember, ES sigs can fade from strong
to weak or from medium to very weak when you have the possibility to
install only 1x 7el like me (the 13-floor house with my antenna on top I don't own).
but I am happy anyway, you know. Ok, I am sorry of some unlucky behaviour of
some DO's or HB9's in your region for example. but keep in mind, sometimes also
the DX can use the wrong periode - and now? Is the DO not allowed to answer?
I know its a little difficult, but I saw a big improove in spirit about the behaviuor on
FT8 during last openings around HB9. So dear Udo, if you do have strong signals,
don't forget others could have very weak sigs at the same time and so FT8 wil be
more as fine to use it. It isn't shitty at all! Everybody is free to use SSB around, yes,
around 144.300 od CW around 144.050. So please let decide the smaller ones to
use FT8, If someon is not working correctly in your eyes, I think you can contact
and talk to him as an adult and all will be fine in future if you explain it nicely.
Or am I really totally wrong and FT8 is a "shitty" mode?
Regards, Chris, HB9DFG@gmx.net.

Opening in 2 phases, firstly to EA7 and secondly to I/IT9. I have been hardly looking for EA8/D4 but nil, the path geometry wasn't in favour, at least for me. Apart for 2 out of my 7 FT8 QSO's, the signal level wasn't strong enough to sustain an SSB QSO (CW, probably yes, though weak, but the QSO partner must at least be CW skilled), at least at the time I worked these stations. I was watching my SDR/Linrad running on 144.200-400 to detect any SSB/CW activity. When there was some, I left 144.174 and QSYed around 144.300. I called on 145.500 FM too but without success.
So, all isn't that bad in FT8 as many claim, it is the usage that is made of it which needs to be optimized ! At the beginning or end of an opening, FT8 is very useful. The mapping feature out of PSK reporter is an added value too ! The closed station that spotted me in Es was from JN54AC, 855km away, indicating a very high MUF.
Many FT8 (newbie) operators are unware of what DXing is, they use their vertical antenna and, even if at 150km from you (for them it is a DX !...), they keep on calling again and again even if you call "CQ DX" or "CQ ES". That's a problem with FT8, mainly in "dense" areas like PA/G/DL.

I tried to spread my attention between FT8 and SSB, and partially succeeded, working 2 stations in Phone.
Although FT8 may bring advantages when it comes to very weak signals, there's a total absence of any structure on 174. In this Es instance a (very) local ham destroyed at least 1 QSO. However, it is not only PA/PE/DL/ON to blame though, as also DX stations could be found in either period. Spreading to a different frequency (same like the QSY form 144.300!) could be a great assist in decreasing the QRM. Or making QSY to SSB/CW of course. Also listening what your neighbour is trying to work and to anticpate would elaviate the QRM problem.

Dear DX stations: What about sending a QSY freq in the CQ message as soon as the band opens? E.g. "CQ 180 EA7ABC"??

When I was able to work on SSB and CW I heard only EB7BKY. After that I must go out for my XYL and shopping. Anyway I made two QSOs on FT8 waiting in my car :)
All of this station was possible with CW or SSB, FT8 is non sense during ES with QSB and unstable signals ! ! ! Lot of guys in wrong period.

DK1FG and DL1NEO both from JN59 heard today D41CV with TR+ES mix 4875 and 4870km on FT8 ! ! !
