Aurora

You need to LOGIN to send your report!

Aurora is a phenomena which is most prevalent in the regions close to the so called "Aurora Belt". Depending on where you live in the world this belt may be southern Canada or the northern part of the Nordic countries. In these areas Aurora will occur a dozen times a year, even in the quiet periods of the Solar Cycle. If you live more to the south, like in Central Europe, years may pass with little or no Aurora openings.
Finally, after a very long solar minimum, our neighbouring star has been showing activity since early 2010. Sunspots have been appearing again, but thus far there have been no major Aurora openings. However, we are interested to have infos about ANY Aurora opening occurring in the European area (other parts of the Northen and Southern hemisphere may be added later, depending on Ham and Solar activity). So if you make any Aurora QSOs on 2 metre or 70 cm, please post them into the aurora page using LOGIN, or send as a text file to pa3biy@mmmonvhf.de and pa2dw@mmmonvhf.de. The results of QSOs will be plotted on a map of Europe, and/or posted as lists of worked stations.

In order to produce an intersection map of the position of the Aurora cloud(s), we need reports from both stations who have been involved in a QSO, including an accurate beam heading. Please use LOGIN (please register), and file your list of QSOs by clicking: "Send your report" and follow the guidelines.

Good and long lasting Aurora. As the aurora happened on St. Patrick's day, it's already called The St. Patrick's Day storm of 2015. The aurora followed on the CME inpact from a C9 flare (2 days earlier) around 04:30-05:30 UTC. The Bz component was turned north at the beginning but started to point south around 14:00 UTC. At 14:40 UTC a G4 level geomagnetic storm was reached with solar windspeed up to 700 km/sec.
QSO's are reported over 2000 km. When logs arrive at MMMonVHF we can see what was possible during the opening.
Visual aurora was seen as south as OK/south DL and 9A.

Nice, wide AU (350 to 40 dgrs), a bit surprise by intensity. This is only 3rd AU in cycle 24 accessible from JN86DM.

It is very nice to work EI on st. Patrick's day and drink a beer after QSO... and repeat it twice, hi (EI4DQ, EI3KD).

Comment:
All stations worked on CW. A very intense Aurora with multiple reflection points down to 75deg. I found conditions particularly favourable between 60-70deg. The pile-ups were often very heavy, which slowed the QSO rate. So too the more Easterly DX was often hidden in the wall of EU stations calling. I know I was heard by UT5EL in KO31 (1866Km). It must have been particularly rewarding for stations in Southern EU to hear and work such a range of Northern DX, so too for the nearer but smaller “Little Pistol” stations. I certainly enjoyed the event and hope to work those stations that called but didn’t make it into my log book on this occasion. 73, David G4DHF

MANY THANKS TO ALL THE STATIONS WORKED, AND TO ALL THE STATIONS IN THE PILE-UPS THAT I COULDN'T QUITE GET, THANK YOU FOR TRYING !!!!
TRYING TO PULL STATIONS OUT OF AN AURORAL PILE UP ON SSB IS JUST CRAZY !!!
INTERESTING THE ALMOST EASTERLY DIRECTION OF THE AURORA AND AS IT FADED IT WENT MORE TO THE NORTHERLY DIRECTION (10-30)
BUT WHAT A GREAT TIME WE ALL HAD
THANKS AGAIN TO EVERYONE WORKED AND TO THOSE THAT CALLED.

If you don't have to use SSB in an Au - don't do it. Its very hard work.
The real DX was on CW of course.

My first great AU opening. I was surprised by the great dopler, sometimes up to 400 Hz.I wrote down what was heard. Sometimes it was only locator or call sign. Here is the chronically UNORDERED "extract": IO64XV, KO15US, KO24FO LY2WR, JO46MD, JO65CS, KO24QG, YL2FZ, KO03HT, IO75TQ GM4CXM, KO15VS LY2R, KO38HJ ES6PC, JO57XK. On SSB GI4SNA IO64XM, GW8JLY IO81JM, G8GXP IO93FQ, OZ1BEF JO46OE. Especially ES6PC was great, but on ON4KST (where he was logged in) did not respond.

While at work I received Aurora warning from my own magnetometer. But as usual no way to leave QRL so I arrived at home after 17:30 UTC. At that moment most of the signals were north-south for me and not to the east where the long distances were. So...most the time was used to find signal to the east but only 2 x LY was worked. I heard many, many stations but only worked a few. Conclusion for me was that the better distances were worked just before I arrived at home

All these QSO's where made on 50MHz, and mentioned because working so far south is very rare also on 6m!
In my 25 years as ham I never worked sofar south in aurora before... JN.4 and JN.5 happend before, but JN72 and JN63 is vy odd

Had a pleasant eavening good activity but missed the real DX, Heared HA8CE for a little while but no QSO

This was a good aurora at times dopler up to 1.3 to 1.4 KHz

Hope for some more aurora this season, now is the time ;-)
